Do you need a baby shower cupcake idea for an upcoming boy baby shower? These baby rattle cupcakes are absolutely adorable and will please all of your guests. The cupcake decorating supplies you will need are cupcake liners, frosting tip #47 and a frosting bag, blue dye, sucker sticks, ribbon, mints, a glue gun, and buttercream frosting.
First you’ll need to bake the amount of cupcakes you will be serving. If this is for a boy baby shower you can use blue cupcake wrappers, or drop some blue dye into the cupcake batter and pour into some white cupcake liners. You can do all the same things for a girl baby shower. Fill the cupcake liners half full and bake them. Prepare your frosting and reserve about 1 cup to be dyed dark blue. Dye the rest of the batch light blue. This can be accomplished by adding a lot of dye to the 1 cup, and a little dye to the rest of the batch of frosting. The buttercream frosting will be very thick, so once you have separated the frosting for the two blues, add milk a teaspoon at a time to the light blue until it is thin enough to spread without definite lines.
To make the stick part of the baby rattle, glue a breath mint to the bottome of a sucker stick. Your guests can still eat the mint, they’ll just have to suck it long enough to make the glue fall off. Next make a bow out of ribbon and glue it about an inch above the breath mint. You will be inserting the other end of the sucker stick into the cupcake and if you glue the ribbon right in the middle of the sucker stick the bow will be squished into the cupcake. That doesn’t look very good. You can also tie a bow onto the sucker stick and that way you adjust the bow to where you like it.
Next put your dark blue frosting in a decorating bag with frosting tip #47. Firmly squeeze the bag and begin frosting the cupcakes by touching one edge of the cupcake and drawing an arch across the cupcake top. If you make the line straight across is doesn’t look like a round baby rattle. When you touch the frosting tip to the opposite side, your frosting might not break straight off. Use a toothpick to push the edges down and make it wrap into the cupcake liner. Finish by placing round frosting sprinkles or white frosting dots on the dark blue frosting line. Insert the sucker stick by cutting a small hole in the cupcake liner and pushing the stick into the center of the cupcake. Enjoy!
